A unique tribute to Guglielmo Lardelli

Guglielmo Enrico Lardelli F.R.C.O.

Guglielmo Enrico Lardellii composer and pianist/organist came to Australia in 1875 as an eighteen year old. Known as Signor Lardelli, while in Australia he composed hundreds of songs and pianoforte pieces, wrote the music for several theatrical monologues, and collaborated on at least one comic opera (Katherine, 1895). Although he returned to England several times, including two five year periods, Lardelli’s musical career was mostly undertaken in Australia. He spent a number of years in Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide but was also associated with several regional centres during his time in Australia – notably the Hunter Valley city of Maitland (1882-85), Grafton, Bathurst and Townsville.
At various times he held positions as church organist and choirmaster and as a conductor – including choral societies and orchestras. He was also actively involved in teaching (primarily piano and voice), and held an array of administrative positions with various colleges and official organisations.

While in Maitland he married Edith Annia Pauline Gorrick, under the Anglicised version of his name William Henry Lardelli. Signora Lardelli was an accomplished soprano and music teacher.

Re-discovering Guglielmo Enrico Lardelli & his compositions

The story of Guglielmo Enrico Lardelli was brought to Maitland’s attention by Val Rudkin (historian and honorary member of Maitland & District Historical Society) who researched and wrote an article for the MDHS Bulletin on this fascinating musical gentleman. His connection had been largely forgotten in the local community and is now celebrated.

Russell is currently a full time member of the music faculty staff at St Bede’s Catholic College, Chisholm.

Steam Motion:  This piece connects with Maitland’s rich locomotive heritage, and reflects the majesty and momentum of a Steam Train journey. Commencing with the grandeur of seeing a locomotive, the piece then introduces driving and repetitive rhythms to propel the listens journey aboard.
